  In a nutshell, my journey from Old to Young Creationism really was shaped by the realization that my first loyalty in terms of epistemology (how I know what I know) was to the Scriptures and that I was bringing the scientific consensus, which is dominated by material naturalism, to my understanding of orig ins and the observable universe. I went through many twists and turns to reconcile the Bible to the consensus before I realized that material naturalism has no way to account for a supra-natural, immaterial God acting on His Creation and that it is not His requirement to fit everything we observe into a tidy naturalistic framework. His normative will is that the universe act within the laws He has established, but He is in no way bound to act within them, according to His good pleasure.  That made me more and more begin to question my presuppositions and areas that I was capitulating. I have no issue with scientific discovery of the universe, inasmuch as it falls within our duty to understand the works of God in Creation. That being said, I think that the heavens declare the glory of God and that Earth and the life that inhabits it is a unique and miraculous one-time occurrence created through and for the work of Christ as Savior and Judge. This video is a good watch to get an idea of things that shape my thinking, scientifically (and just to clarify - this is substantiation for my theology, whereas Scripture is the foundation). Here is another great article that frames a good approach to understanding and skepticism of "scientific" claims around extraterrestrial life. Here is another one from 2007 when yet another planet was announced.

Found here From Wikipedia: Scientism  is belief in the universal applicability of the scientific method and approach, and the view that empirical science constitutes the most authoritative worldview or most valuable part of human learning to the exclusion of other viewpoints. Scientism is really the elevation of humanistic material naturalism to the level of religious devotion and promotes science - which speaks only to material and natural conditions - as a valid and trustworthy method for contextualizing reality. Romans 1:25 (ESV) 25  because they exchanged the truth about God for  a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator,  who is blessed forever! Amen.

It is crucial not to capitulate the fact that God is supra-natural and is not bound to the laws of nature, since He is the author of those laws and is ruler over them. He has the right to subject them to His will for His purposes.

This meme is more about judging the ultimate disposition of others, but I think it also speaks to the measure that we *can* use to judge other's actions as well as warning in terms of the focus of ultimate judgement. When Christ is in the center of our eye, His righteousness removes the "plank" and allows us to see and judge rightly.
