Creatio ex nihilo means creation out of nothing physical.
That matters.
Every origins model assumes some degree of functional maturity. A universe incapable of functioning until every process had independently traversed its inferred developmental history would not be a functioning universe at its beginning.
The real question, then, is not whether functional maturity existed. The question is how much.
Biblically, the degree of initial functional maturity was greater than consensus retrodictive calculations infer.
By retrodiction, I mean the use of present observations, together with a model and its assumptions, to reconstruct or infer prior states and events. Such calculations can be internally consistent and empirically sophisticated while still remaining model-dependent.
This is why the familiar phrase “apparent age” is problematic.
Apparent to whom?
More precisely:
Apparent under which model, assumptions, and interpretation?
What we actually observe is a mature, logical, informational, dynamic, life-supporting universe. Within a biblical creation model, that observation is not surprising. It is what the model leads us to expect.
Consider a virtual world.
No one accuses its creator of deception because the world begins runtime with functioning terrain, mature trees, established ecosystems, populated databases, operating physical laws, and initialized state information. We understand immediately that runtime history and initialized state are different categories.
The state of the world at t₀ does not require that every process represented within that state actually occurred before t₀.
That distinction matters when reasoning about creation.
An observation gives us a present state. A model supplies assumptions about how that state came to exist. Interpretation connects the two. Extrapolation then produces an inferred history.
So:
Observed State + Model Assumptions → Extrapolated Age
But:
Extrapolated Age ≠ Necessarily Historical Age
If creation began with designed functional maturity, then calculations extending presently observed processes backward through the initialization boundary may produce a coherent extrapolated age without describing the actual duration of the system’s history.
That is not deception.
It is initialization.
